Cheese dome Michael Graves for Alessi
Rare cheese dome by Alessi, designed by Michael Graves. Only 2500 pieces of this design MG30 from 1997 were released worldwide.
The whole consists of 3 separate parts:
The dome itself is made of transparent plastic and has a cheerful mouse as a handle at the top.
The cheese dome stands on a stainless steel tray.
This fits a ceramic cutting board that looks like a slice of Swiss cheese.
Both the cutting board and the handle of the mouse-shaped dome are cream-colored (light yellow).
About the designer:
Architect Michael Graves was born in 1934 in Indianapolis. He was part of the New York School, an architectural group that reapplied the aesthetic, geometric design of the International Style. He died in 2015.
About the manufacturer:
Alessi was founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi, born in Italy and raised in Switzerland.
Later it came under the leadership of Carlo Alessi and brother Luigi, who introduced collaboration with external designers in 1955. This resulted in bestsellers such as the 1957 series of wire baskets by Luigi Massaroni and Carlo Mazzeri.
In 1970, under Alberto Alessi, the company worked with maestros such as Achille Castiglioni , Richard Sapper , Alessandro Mendini and Ettore Sottsass.
In the 1980s they changed their image from factory to industrial research laboratory. Alessi collaborated with Aldo Rossi , Michael Graves and Philippe Starck, who created some of Alessi's best-sellers, such as Graves' bird kettle.
In the 90s, Alessi also introduced plastic at the request of designers because it was an easier material than metal. The theme “Family Follows Fiction” brought playful objects by artists such as Stefano Giovannoni and Alessandro Mendini.
In the 2000s, Alessi collaborated with architects including Wiel Aret s, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Tom Kovac, Greg Lynn , MVRDV , Jean Nouvel and UN Studio on its “coffee and tea towers”. The sets had a limited production run of 99 pieces. Also from the 2000s was Fratelli Campana’s Blow Up series.
In 2006 the company reorganized its products into three lines: 'A di Alessi' the lower price range; 'Alessi'; and 'Officina Alessi' experimental and limited series.
In 2007, Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture Asymptote Architecture designed the New York flagship store for Alessi in the SoHo district on Greene Street.
Alessi products can be seen in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York) , the Metropolitan Museum of Art , the Victoria and Albert Museum , the Centre Pompidou, the Design Museum Holon and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
